The Paraphalaenopsis genus is unique in my opinion. There are only four species in this genus, all of which are endemic to Kalimantan, Indonesia. Among them, Paraphalaenopsis labukensis Shim, A.L.Lamb & C.L.Chan is one of the most beautiful. Its cylindrical leaf morphology sets it apart from most other leaves, and its stunning flowers make this species a favorite among many.
P. labukensis takes quite a long time to reach maturity and bloom. In my garden, it took 7 years and an 80 cm long leaf for P. labukensis to bloom for the first time since being nurtured from a seedling size. Certainly, the lengthy process of caring for it is not easy. In its natural habitat, P. labukensis can have leaves measuring over 200 cm long. It undoubtedly takes years to reach such lengths.
Unfortunately, the conversion of land for plantations and illegal hunting are increasingly pressing and threatening the survival of P. labukensis in its natural habitat.
