The unique character and morphology of the pitcher plant left me in awe. Its ability to absorb nutrients from insects trapped in its trap is truly unique, unlike typical plant behavior, that’s what I thought when reading about the pitcher plant in the science book at school.
Time passed, unexpectedly I was finally introduced to this exotic plant when visiting my new friend’s house, Mr. Yoga Wahyudhi, in Boyolali. He cultivated several types of pitcher plants that grew luxuriantly in his backyard, among which the most prominent was Nepenthes x hookeriana, the largest one with pitchers the size of a palm, its vines climbing up ropes and tree branches to the height of the house roof, wow, I was amazed. My admiration grew even more when I learned that this species was a natural hybrid of Nepenthes rafflesiana and Nepenthes ampullaria in its original habitat; truly, nature’s way of creating beauty is extraordinary.
I want to capture a bit of its exoticism in this simple painting.
