First Impression

In September 2022, I painted my first flower, the Alpinia purpurata (Vieill.) K.Schum. (red ginger). I stumbled upon this captivating flowering plant during a painting day event in June 2022 with IDSBA Bali. Among the plethora of flowers I photographed that day, the red ginger’s striking colour and unique appearance stood out to me. Intrigued by its vibrant hues, I was immediately drawn to paint it. Despite realizing the complexity of its numerous petals as I began sketching, I was determined to proceed.

The distinct red or magenta hue observed in the red ginger isn’t from its flowers but rather from modified leaves housing the actual blooms. These colourful leaves serve a dual purpose: protection and attracting pollinating insects by mimicking flowers. Red ginger is often prized as an ornamental plant, cut flower, and even in traditional medicine.

During the initial painting process at the event Painting Day, I experimented with watercolours on cold pressed paper. It was here that I was introduced to the miraculous eradicator brush, a tool that proved invaluable in refining my botanical painting as I worked. I also received valuable guidance on colouring techniques. Immersed in the process, I thoroughly enjoyed painting this flower and aimed to elevate my skills further. Months later, I revisited the piece, delving into more detail on hot pressed paper (for the first time) and completing it within a week.

I Gusti Jaya Agung Vania Casimira

Born in Denpasar in October 2009, she discovered her passion for drawing and colouring with crayons during elementary school. Throughout the pandemic, she found joy in observing various painting styles and techniques across social media platforms. Exploring self-teaching methods, she developed a fondness for doodling, hand lettering, drawing with pens, and painting with watercolours and gouache. Eventually, she gravitated towards watercolour and drawing pen mediums.

Her journey into botanical art began when she received her first art assignment in junior high school class 1 in July 2021, tasked with drawing Flora using hatching techniques. Choosing Monstera King leaves as her subject, she delved into the intricacies of botanical illustration. Encouraged by her mother, she ventured into the botanical art community IDSBA on Instagram in August 2021 to expand her knowledge. From there, her appreciation for the beauty of flowers blossomed, and she eagerly honed her skills in painting them.
