The Treasure of Pagar Alam

IDR -

My journey in botanical art began with the formation of IDSBA and the preparation for the BAW exhibition in 2018. It started with hunting for specimens to paint, until I finally encountered the unique paphiopedilum orchid. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with paphiopedilum orchids. Apart from their unique appearance, the Paphiopedilum genus is rare. I’ve never grown tired of painting them and have been challenged to paint the many varieties of paphiopedilum.

Paphiopedilum superbiens (Rchb.f.) Stein. from Sumatra. Observing and painting from a live specimen I obtained allowed me to study every detail. I painted it on Kelmscott vellum. This was my first experience painting on vellum. Kelmscott vellum is one of the vellum types used in botanical painting. It has a smooth and fine texture with a white colour. Painting on smooth vellum that is easily lifted with dry brush technique requires extra patience.

Henny Herawati

Henny was born in a small town in Central Java, Indonesia, and now resides in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. While living in Paris from 2008 to 2014, she began learning watercolour painting. She fell in love with and started studying botanical art in 2015 after returning to her home country, Indonesia, known for its rich biodiversity.

This biodiversity serves as her primary inspiration in painting while also promoting the beauty of Indonesian plants, especially orchids and rare species that are always uniquely captivating to paint.

In 2017, she joined fellow botanical art enthusiasts in the Indonesian Botanical Artists Association. Since 2018, she has exhibited her botanical artworks in several cities across Indonesia. Some of her works have been featured as illustrations in Guido J. Braem’s book, “The Genus Paphiopedilum,” published in 2021. This has further fueled her enthusiasm to create and showcase Indonesia’s biodiversity.
