Year of bloom : A Canna's journey in colour

IDR -

Canna x hybrida ‘Orange Beauty’, a classic flower with a fiery personality, stands tall at 1-2 meters. Its velvety blooms boast a vibrant orange hue, kissed with red and yellow at the edges. The plant is native to South, Central America, the West Indies, and Mexico.

For me, this isn’t just any canna flower. It’s the muse for my first botanical painting, a year-long journey that began in March 2023. As the canna bloomed on my digital canvas, it became more than just a flower. It mirrored my own artistic odyssey – a year filled with challenges and self-doubt, ultimately leading to a triumphant completion. The vibrant hues now transcend the fiery flower, symbolizing the bravery and perseverance required to see a project through.

The canna that took root in my hometown, Karawang, didn’t just bloom once; it bloomed twice. First, in its fiery glory, and then again on my canvas, a testament to the transformative power of artistic pursuit.

Dini Teja

Dini, a kindergarten teacher by day and a blossoming artist by chance, has always loved painting, mostly fluffy friends like cats and dogs in loose watercolours or digital styles. Ironically, botanical art seemed out of reach for her. But last year, she surprised herself by tackling a Canna flower – a year-long challenge that bloomed into a finished piece! It pushed her, but the joy of the process was unlike anything she’d experienced. Now, she’s excited to see where this artistic journey takes her.
