This work began three years ago (2021) with an interest in exploring the texture of the fruit skin known as ‘konyal’ or passion fruit, which is quite common in markets or supermarkets. For days, these fruits were placed on the table until they became ripe, and during that time, I contemplated how to capture their spots, the reflections of light on their smooth yet slightly dull surface, and their warm, rosy colour. After completing the outer surface, I became interested in presenting their contents. The translucent seeds, enveloped in a thin membrane, displayed enticing colours, truly captivating. Not stopping there – after studying this plant, I wanted to include the beauty of its flowers. This process was delayed amidst working on other pieces, and there were times when I felt hesitant to resume after so long. But as time passed, I could feel an evolution in my artistic approach. Therefore, this work serves as a personal record of the joy of creation and the never-ending self-development journey.

Deinitisa Amarawi

Since delving into botanical art 7 years ago, Dei, a graduate in interior design, has been regularly exhibiting alongside IDSBA. Despite not having prior knowledge of botany, her desire to learn about and reveal the natural richness of Indonesia has driven her to explore the plants in her surroundings. In 2022, her artwork depicting the Sterculia oblongata R.Br. tree titled “The Blooming Fruit II: Underneath the Canopy” received the Best of Show award at the Flora of Southeast Asia exhibition at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. To this day, she continues to create art primarily using watercolour, hoping that botanical art can raise awareness of the importance of plant presence in society.
