Racinaea undulifolia (Mez) H.Luther

IDR -

This is an epiphytic Bromeliaceae native to the upper reaches of the Amazon River in tropical South America and in the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains. This type of plant has always been my favorite. The wavy and slender leaves of Racinaea undulifolia are very unique, and the huge size of this subject, which is rare and worth drawing.
Epiphytic Bromeliaceae have always played a role as health indicators in tropical forest ecosystems because they connect tall trees in the forest with birds and insects, and allow different canopy layers to host diverse organisms.
Facing this spectacular Racinaea undulifolia, I intuitively drew the whole picture of the plant, so that people can fully see the shape and feel its strong style. This artwork is an early one during my time of art creation. During the drawing process, I was trained to recognize and mix different green colors. In addition, this plant comes from a mid-altitude mountainous area, and the high temperatures in Taipei are very unfriendly to it, so I have to put it back into the low-temperature greenhouse every 1 to 2 hours while drawing. The original artwork is collected in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, UK.

Annie Chen

I am a botanical artist who is inheriting traditional care and developing new expressions.
A trip to the Amazon rainforest changed my life. After 20 years working as a business consultant, I began to draw the plants of the rainforest. Plants became the most precious treasures in my eyes.
Plants in the Amazon’s rich ecological environment, especially air plants like orchids and Bromeliaceae, are amazing. Not just because of their dazzling beauty, colours and plant morphology, but also the evolutionary story that they tell. Through these artworks, I want to show the spiritual poverty that human beings will face with the continued destruction of the rainforest and disappearance of these precious plants.
