Looking at the dangling purple flowers, it feels mysterious when walking under the drizzling rain; truly an unforgettable experience. Growing in untamed soil tempted me to pluck them. Unfortunately, there was only one strand hanging from a low branch that I could reach. Nevertheless, it didn’t diminish its beauty when placed in a vase. Mustering the courage to draw it, even though I hadn’t touched coloured pencils in years.
Its name is Petrea volubilis L., a decorative plant also known as purple wreath or sandpaper vine. Originating from the tropical regions of Central America, it belongs to the Verbenaceae family. Petrea’s flowers boast a combination of light and dark purple hues, giving off an exotic vibe. The colour purple itself is often associated with wisdom and spirituality. Hence, it’s no wonder many people connect the colour purple with things that are unpredictable and mysterious. The overlapping petals give it a unique and dramatic appearance. This plant is known for its ability to climb, making it often used as a wall cover, fence, or pergola.
Petrea volubilis thrives well in most regions of Indonesia, which generally have warm and humid climates. However, caution is needed; behind its charming beauty, this plant is toxic if consumed. Therefore, it should be planted in areas inaccessible to small children or pets. Petrea flowers indeed have their own allure, gracefully climbing and boasting stunning colours. Making it an attractive choice for plant enthusiasts who want beautiful and long-lasting ornamental plants.
